La ville n’avait alors qu’une rue, la rue Notre-Dame ; il y avait une rivière rue Craig ; on allait à la chasse rue Sherbrooke ; il fallait être armé jusqu’aux dents pour se risquer vers le Beaver Hall. L’été, on faisait des parties de canot, de la Place Viger au Griffintown ; on pouvait pêcher à la ligne Place-à-Foin.

Notre génération appartenait à l’époque de transition entre le Canada ancien et le Canada nouveau. Nous avons connu le vieux Montréal, celui que nous avaient légué nos pères, avec une physionomie qui se modifiait lentement et imperceptiblement par l’action d’un progrès mesuré et longuement prévu… D’un côté nous tenions aux fusils à pierre, de l’autre nous chargions par la culasse.

Do we learn? That is a question I ask myself as well. I enjoy the juxtaposition of the old and new butting against each other. It makes one think, at least it makes me think.

This borough was first developed two centuries ago along a canal that facilitated commercial maritime traffic beyond Montreal on the St. Lawrence River. The canal spawned the development of industry in the area. Industry remained for more than 100 years until it declined for a number of factors. People and industry moved out. The borough is currently being redeveloped. This will take time.
